Pushing The Spartan In All Of Us

This past weekend I attacked Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania and ran the Spartan Super. It was 8+ miles up and down the mountain with 30+ obstacles. The heat index was above 100 degrees for most of the race, and I was pushing myself for 5 hours, 27 minutes, and 44 seconds. I carried logs, sandbags, and buckets of stones up and down the mountain side. I pulled myself up ropes, traversed monkey bars, swam under obstacles in muddy water, climbed walls, and jumped over fire to reach that finish line.

It’s one of many races I will run this year, but ranks among the hardest. It’s also part of a larger objective – to complete three Spartan races of varying lengths is to achieve the Spartan Trifecta. This coming weekend I will complete the Spartan Sprint – less than half the length of the Super, and then there will be a number of races until mid September - when I will attack Mt. Killington for the Spartan Beast - which is triple the length of the Sprint.

To some of you, this may sound like a crazy way to spend my weekends, but it’s not about the Saturdays and Sundays, it’s about all the days in between. It’s about a lifestyle seven days a week, of putting one foot in front of the other, pushing towards that finish line, and then the next one and the next one, because when one race ends doesn’t mean the road ends. The road continues, life continues, with curves and straightaways, potholes and speedbumps, smooth pavement and hard.

I equate this aspect of my life with how I approach my commitment to my occupation of realtor – the same tenacity, the same unwavering effort day in and day out, one step at a time. Yesterday, four and a half miles into Spartan Super, about halfway up a mountain, drenched in sweat, I heard people around me talking of quitting. Others had dropped out and wanted to be taken off the course. There were calls for “medic, medic.” Off to my right, in a brief respite of shade, a fellow racer took a cell phone out a pocket from his hydration pack. He made a brief call and I heard the word “counter-offer.” A few sentences more and I surmised he was a realtor like me. I gave him a smile that conveyed understanding, and he returned it – a unique bond between fellow realtors pushing the limits.

Make a choice today and get out and put one foot in front of the other.
