The signing into law of legislation A-839/S-258 will prohibit offshore development, exploration and production drilling for natural gas or oil in state tidal waters, state waters and submerged lands in state waters.  The bill was recently signed by Governor Phil Murphy.  It's important to note that the the bipartisan effort recognized the high stakes involved for our state since the federal government proposed to allow drilling off New Jersey's waters.  Fisheries, wildlife habitats and environmentally sensitive areas would have been under constant threat without this law.  Being that the state of Florida was given an exemption from the federal government due to it's concerns about the tourism industry only further justified the law that NJ recently passed.  Our roughly 130 miles of coastline is in a far stronger position being protected from the risks involved from offshore drilling.
