With autumn upon us, now is the perfect time for homeowners to get their property in shape and help avoid problems in the months ahead. Here are six key jobs to tackle before cold weather sets in
Was Your House Built Before January 1977 New Smoke Alarm Regulations Are Now In Effect
So you have decided that you want to sell or rent your house. Beware of the new Smoke Alarm regulation that became effective this year. Homes that were built prior to January 1977 are now required to install 10 year sealed battery smoke detectors in both single & multi family dwellings. This also affects motel rooms and all housing units in rooming houses. Houses built after January 1, 1977 are not affected because these houses had to meet the state's Uniform Construction Code that required installation of alternating current hardwired alarms. The Department of Community Affairs states that the most common reason a smoke alarm stops functioning is the lack of a working battery. The installation of the 10 year sealed battery smoke alarm will last 10 years before replacement required. So before you list or rent your house that was built prior to 1977 make sure you install new 10 year battery smoke detectors. This will also keep you & your family safe in case of a fire.
